Morro Data
It is the 2nd year for me attending the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show representing Morro Data. In addition to all the new themes and technology trends, there are 2 key takeaways in my point of view for NAB 2018 – solutions and partnerships.
At NAB we have seen a lot of technology providers, from cameras, field crew gears to editing software products; from storage components, servers to cloud storage.
The truth is that not a single provider can fulfill the diverse customers’ need by itself. It takes multiple integrated pieces working together in an ecosystem to solve customers’ problems. Among the exhibitors at NAB, it was easy enough for me to run into Morro Data channel partners as well as technology partners including DELL EMC, Western Digital, Seagate, Axle Video, Backblaze and Wasabi Cloud.
ReelData, a reseller partner of Morro, featured the 3-in-1 CloudNAS solution at its booth. Based in LA, CA, ReelData offers solution of storage systems, cloud backup, file transfer, media asset management, and media production software to M&E customers. Morro Data’s CloudNAS is an important part of ReelData’s portfolio since it was first introduced to the market in 2017.

Partnering with technology providers and system integrators, Morro offers innovative cloud file services for large file transfer, digital asset archive, and cross-location collaboration with an emphasis on ease-of-use and lower cost of ownership.
NAB stands for National Association of Broadcasting. The Media and Entertainment (M&E) industry is the single largest segment of NAB. With the rise of YouTube, Amazon, Netflix and other streaming media, the media industry has been reshaped. We have seen an increasing need to store, process, and manage the digital content in the cloud – for long-term offsite archive, large file transfer and distribution, and cross-site collaboration.
In his NAB blog, David Friend, CEO of our partner Wasabi Technologies gives a good description of what it takes to create a TV Show or Movie. Notable is the amount of content, 100 Minutes of raw video for 1 minute of production video, and the large distributed teams that create the final production. Wasabi just announced “zero egress” offering for its Wasabi-hot cloud storage, which Morro Data has already incorporated.
Why is this a big deal? It’s one of the best news for M&E customers and especially beneficial for Morro Data users. Assuming you have a large amount of raw footage and some post-production content. You can store them with Morro CloudNAS. It’s cached cloud, so it’s faster. It’s integrated with your existing infrastructure, so it’s secure. And it works for multiple locations under a global file structure. Furthermore, once the content is in the cloud, with “zero egress” you are free to send, transfer and distribute the content as needed. It’s fully integrated with your workflow and the lifecycle of your data and all at a low cost. For more on Morro Data and Wasabi see Wasabi-Morro-CloudNAS.
Another partner, Backblaze also extended its B2 offering with cloud computing capability, Fireball for initial user data uploading/transfer, and lowered cloud storage cost. Morro CloudNAS provides file system access on B2 object storage, with encrypted transfer and cached high performance for media contents.
CloudNAS offers simple and easy-to-deploy solutions for file transfer, multiple-site collaboration, and offsite backup, all based on Morro Data Global file system and Cache and Sync technology. In our latest release, 3.0, we have added two new capabilities, Azure Active Directory(AD) and Replicate Shares, to enable CloudNAS users to take advantage of industry developments to significantly lower their cost of providing global file services.
Combining Replicate Shares with zero cost egress enables very low-cost file transfer to cloud or between sites. At Morro Data we see that low-cost hybrid cloud storage with zero egress will be very disruptive to the large file transfer market, ideal for M&E with their large distributed workflows. With Cache & Sync, File Storage and File Transfer become one and the same.
